MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 666 For JUNE 2011
MOSTLY RATHER COOL AND CHANGEABLE; SHORT WARM SPELLS DURING FIRST AND LAST WEEKS
Text Box: High pressure built across the country during the opening days, but from the 5th until the 23rd a generally cyclonic type prevailed, although few of the depressions were deep. Tropical air flooded northwards across the UK during the 25th-27th, quickly followed by a thundery trough, but pressure built again as the month ended. Mean sea-level pressure across the British Isles was quite close to the long-term average, and nowhere more than 2.5 mbar below it. The main feature on the pressure anomaly chart was a large centre of +14mbar over southern Greenland.

Rain and strong winds in the north and west of Scotland on the 1st cleared northwards, while all other parts of the country were rather warm with sunny periods. The warmth intensified over the next few days with 25.4C as far north as Dyce (Aberdeenshire) on the 2nd, while the highest reading during this spell was 28.1C at Lee-on-Solent (Hants) on the 4th. Much of the UK enjoyed unbroken sunshine on the 3rd. The 5th was a much cooler day with a brisk northeasterly wind, and there were outbreaks of rain across England, Wales and Northern Ireland. The rain was heaviest in London and the Southeast where 35mm fell at Wisley (Surrey). The day's high was just 8.4C at Altnahinch and 8.7C at Ballypatrick Forest (both Co. Antrim). A depression approached from the northwest on the 6th and remained slow-moving over the next few days, bringing further rain or showers to most districts, the showers accompanied by thunder locally. Days were cool and nights cold, with -0.3C at Ravensworth (N Yorks) early on the 7th, -1.9C at Altnaharra (Sutherland) on the 10th, -0.9C at Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire) on the 11th, and -0.6C at Bala (Merionethshire) on the 12th. Cloud and rain associated with a vigorous depression spread quickly north and east across the UK during the 12th which, averaged nationally, was the wettest day since 2nd Oct 2010. Capel Curig (Caernarfon) collected 37mm, while afternoon temperatures were widely between 10 and 14C.

A transitory ridge of high pressure brought most places a brighter and warmer day on the 14th, but a new depression took up residence to the west of Scotland overnight Text Box: 14th/15th, eventually drifting east across the British Isles on the 17th and 18th. Rain fell daily during this period in most parts of the country, and was particularly heavy on the 18th when 44mm fell at West Freugh (Galloway). Yet another depression crossed the country between the 20th and 22nd, delivering yet more widespread rain; 47mm fell at Gogarbank (nr Edinburgh) and 41mm at Salsburgh (Lanarkshire) on the 21st. Showers and local thunderstorms followed on the 22nd and 23rd.

A belt of rain moved northwards across the UK late on the 24th and 25th, introducing a tropical airstream. It become very warm and humid on the 26th in England, Wales, Northern Ireland and southern Scotland with prolonged sunshine, and 29.2C was logged at St James's Park (London). The next night was uncomfortably warm with 19.9C at Benson (Oxon), and the 27th was hot in eastern England with 33.3C at Olympic Park (London), the highest anywhere in the UK for five years. Showers and thunderstorms broke out that day, chiefly in Scotland, Wales, and northern and western England, moving on to eastern counties on the 28th. On the afternoon of the 28th the temperature reached 27.9C at Frittenden (Kent) but the rest of eastern England was 10-15 degC cooler than the preceding day. The last two days of the month were rather cool with sunny spells and scattered showers.

Mean maximum temperature ranged from 1.5 degC below the 1981-2010 average in western Scotland to 0.5-1.0 above in eastern England, while the mean minimum was 0.0-1.0 degC below in all regions and, as measured by the CET, it was the coolest June for 12 years. Rainfall percentages ranged from about 70 in northwest Scotland and locally in the Midlands and Lincolnshire (where Moulton Park, near Northampton, collected just 21mm of rain) to nearly 200 in the London area. Sunshine percentages varied between 60 locally in southern Scotland and 120 in southwest Wales, and the biggest sunshine aggregate for the month was 245 hours at Eastbourne (Sussex).
