MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 678 For JUNE 2012
OVER ENGLAND & WALES THE WETTEST JUNE IN 285 YEARS OF RECORDS, THE DULLEST SINCE 1987, AND THE COLDEST SINCE 1991
Text Box: June was a relentlessly cyclonic month; it was among the most cyclonic Junes in a record stretching back 140 years, and the mean sea-level pressure at the 55N 05W gridpoint was the lowest in the entire series. Anomalies ranged from -2mbar in Shetland to -9mbar in southwest Ireland. The depression which crossed England and Wales overnight 7th/8th with a central pressure of 980 mbar is believed to have been the deepest in June for at least 100 years.

The first two days were generally quiet, but heavy rain spread from the southwest to much of England and Wales overnight 2nd/3rd and continued till early on the 4th; 46mm fell in 48h at Astwood Bank (Worcs). The 3rd was also unusually cold with highs of 6.3C at Emley Moor and 6.6C at Wilsden (both West Yorks), while in northern Scotland there was local air frost including a minimum of -3.5C at Loch Glascarnoch (Wester Ross) early on the 5th - the month's lowest. Another depression crossed the country on the 5th/6th accompanied by renewed rain, heavy in places, then the exceptionally deep depression tracked across Wales and northern England during the 8th bringing widespread heavy rain though northern Scotland again escaped; 102mm fell in 48h at Trawsgoed (Ceredigion) triggering serious flooding along several rivers in mid-Wales. Gusts to 58kn were reported from Mumbles (Glamorgan) on both the 7th and 8th. A shallow depression tracked along the south coast of England during the 10th and 11th accompanied by prolonged heavy rain across southern Britain; this time Hampshire and Sussex bore the brunt of the flooding with 48h totals of 76mm at Wiggonholt and 75mm at Shoreham (both Sussex). 12th and 13th were quieter days except in Cornwall and Devon (and locally elsewhere) where there were thundery downpours. Up to the 13th there had only been 12h of bright sunshine at Watnall (Notts) with as many as eight sunless days.

Another deep depression crossed Ireland and northern England on the 15th and 16th delivering further widespread rain and strong winds. Capel Curig (Caernarfon) Text Box: collected 91mm and Threave (Galloway) 88mm in 60h. A cold northeast wind affected northern Scotland and the high on the 15th at Braemar (Aberdeenshire) was just 6.9C. The next three days were rather drier, though still with local showers, and it became a little warmer in central and southern districts. But between the 21st and 23rd a deepening depression tracked NNE-wards across the country bringing another bout of heavy and widespread rain; 140mm fell in 60h at Blencathra and 131mm at Keswick (both Cumbria) and there was much flooding in Cumbria, Lancashire and neighbouring parts of Yorkshire. It became briefly warm and humid between the 26th and 28th with 28.6C reached at Gravesend/Broadness (Kent) on the latter date, but local downpours triggered flooding in Belfast on the 27th, and severe thunderstorms broke out across central and northern parts of England and Wales and parts of southern Scotland on the 28th; hailstones the size of cricket balls were noted in Leicestershire and Lincolnshire, tornadoes and funnel clouds were also observed, and 64mm of rain fell at Whitley Bay with flooding in parts of Tyneside. Rail links to Scotland were cut for a time. The last few days of the month were unsettled and rather windy.

Over England and Wales, this was the coolest June since 1991, the dullest since 1987, and the wettest in a record stretching back to 1766 with approaching four times the monthly normal rainfall locally in southeast England. Mean maximum temperature was typically 1.0 to 2.5 degC below the 1981-2010 mean, whereas mean minima were generally close to normal. Rainfall totals ranged from 344mm at Capel Curig to 38mm at Fair Isle and Stornoway - it was a notably dry month in the Northwest Highlands and the Northern and Western Isles. Sunshine totals varied between 174h at Manston (Kent) and 58h at Eskdalemuir (Dumfriesshire) and unofficial sites in the north Midlands reported totals below 50h - such monthly aggregates would not have been out of place in December or January. Several sites from the West Country to southern Scotland reported new low records.
