MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 690 For JUNE 2013
THE DRIEST JUNE OVER ENGLAND & WALES SINCE 2006, AND LOCALLY IN THE SOUTHEAST SINCE 1996
Text Box: The mean monthly pressure distribution was close to normal, with all parts of the country registering anomalies between zero and 2 mbar above the long-term average. The mean flow was a diffluent westerly one, a pattern often associated with dry months.

The first ten days of June were mostly anticyclonic, although a moderate northeasterly flow developed across England and Wales from the 4th. June's lowest minimum occurred early on the 1st when a low of -1.1C was logged at Tulloch Bridge (Lochaber). Much of the country was dry throughout this period and it became warm in western and some southern districts from the 3rd. Highest maxima during this period were 25.0C at Lee-on-Solent (Hants) on the 6th and 24.7C at Porthmadog (Caernarfon) on the 7th. It was very sunny throughout the first ten days in parts of northwest England and Wales with a total of 126.7h at Valley (Anglesey), and over the six days from the 5th to the 10th as much as 98.1h sunshine was recorded at Tiree (Argyll). Scattered thunderstorms broke out across southern England on the 7th and 8th but amounts of rain were mostly small. Much of eastern Britain was quite sunny during the first week, but it became cooler and cloudier from the 8th onwards, and on the 9th the temperature climbed no higher than 9.8C at Inverbervie (Kincardineshire).

A cyclonic/westerly pattern followed between the 11th and 16th and all districts had rain or showers at times during this period. Wettest day was the 14th when Northern Ireland and southwest Scotland had a good deal of rain: 40mm fell at Ballypatrick Forest (Co Antrim) and 31mm at Lough Fea (Co Londonderry), and winds gusted to 50kn on the same day at St Mary's (Isles of Scilly). The next day the temperature reached only 9.5C at Killylane (Co Antrim) thanks to a further 19mm of rain there.

Pressure was ill-defined across the UK between the 17th and 21st with low pressure often located over France and something of an easterly drift across England and
Text Box: Wales. This was a rather warm and humid period especially in eastern, central and southern parts of England, though sunshine was often rather hard to come by. There were also sporadic outbreaks of rain, though amounts were generally small especially in the south. The warmest day during this spell was the 19th with a high of 26.4C at Herstmonceux (East Sussex), and the following night was also warm in central and southern districts; the temperature fell no lower than 17.1C at Middle Wallop (Hants).

The weekend 22nd/23rd was cyclonic/westerly but there followed a strong rise of pressure on the 24th, though fronts affected much of the UK on the 27th and 28th. There were widespread showers on the 22nd and 23rd with 47mm falling during the 48h period at Kinlochewe (Wester Ross). The next three days were dry in most parts of Britain with occasional sunshine and near-normal temperatures but there was rain at times later on the 27th and 28th, though amounts were not large away from northern and western Scotland. The 29th was mostly dry with sunny spells, and it became warm in the eastern half of England and parts of eastern Scotland on the 30th with the temperature peaking at 27.2C at Heathrow (London).

Mean maximum temperature during June ranged from 0.0-0.5 degC above the 1981-2010 normal in parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland, northwest England and north Wales, to 0.5-1.0 degC below in East Anglia and the Southeast. Mean minimum temperature was within 0.5 degC of the normal in all regions. Locally in southeast England this was the coldest June since 1991. Only in Northern Ireland was rainfall marginally above average; over England and Wales it was the driest June since 2006 and only 11mm of rain fell at Norwich and in parts of London. Western Scotland, northern England, Northern Ireland and Wales enjoyed a rather sunny month; elsewhere sunshine duration was near or slightly below average.
