MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 692 For AUGUST 2013
CONSISTENTLY RATHER WARM; DRY OVER MUCH OF THE COUNTRY, AND QUITE SUNNY IN THE EAST
Text Box: Sea-level pressure was not far from normal during August; anomalies ranged from -1.0 mbar in northwest Scotland to +1.5 mbar in southeast England, and the anomalous flow was weakly southwesterly.

The 1st was a hot day over most of England and Wales with 34.1C reached at Heathrow airport (London) - the highest temperature in the UK for seven years - and the sun shone for 14.1h at Hurn airport (Dorset), while the following night was very warm in East Anglia with a minimum of 19.9C at Cromer (Norfolk). It was less settled in Scotland, and this more changeable weather spread to the rest of the country over the next few days, though the 2nd was very warm and bright in eastern England. Rain was heaviest on the 4th in northwest England and Wales, with 89mm recorded at Llansadwrn (Anglesey), and there were further outbreaks of heavy rain on the 5th over most of England and Wales together with southern and eastern Scotland. The temperature fell to 0.2C at Kinbrace (Sutherland) overnight 4th/5th.

A slack pressure pattern covered the country between the 6th and 8th, and this was followed by a west to northwesterly type between the 9th and 14th. This period was characterised by changeable weather in Scotland and Northern Ireland, though amounts of rain were very small in the Midlands, East Anglia, and southern England. Temperatures were generally close to the seasonal average throughout, though there were occasional rather cold nights, but the sun shone for 14.2h at Valley (Anglesey) on the 7th.

Between the 15th and the 18th the weather became unsettled and rather windy over the whole country, although once again amounts of rain were small in East Anglia and the Southeast. The 15th was a very wet day over central and southern Scotland, Northern Ireland, northern England, Wales and the Midlands, and 55mm fell at Trawsgoed (Ceredigion). Temperatures remained close to or a little below the seasonal norm.
Text Box: An anticyclone tracked from Biscay to Scandinavia between the 19th and 23rd, crossing southern districts on the 20th, though the weather remained rather changeable in Scotland and Northern Ireland. It became warm again in the Midlands, East Anglia and the Southeast, with 27.5C recorded at Heathrow (London) and Writtle (Essex) on the 21st, and 28.6C at Charlwood (Surrey) on the 23rd. Rain spread across much of the country on the 23rd, reaching eastern districts early on the 24th, and heavy rain affected eastern England and eastern Scotland into the early hours of the 25th. Unofficial gauges in south Essex caught the most, with 101mm at Heybridge, 96mm at Hadleigh, and 92mm at Canvey Island, all within 24h; flooding hit Canvey Island and Southend-on-Sea.

A strong ridge developed across Scotland on the 25th, thereafter sinking slowly southward. It became warm again during the last week, though there was some mainly light rain in northern and western districts on some days. The 31st was much cooler and rather windy in northern districts with gusts to 50kn at Stornoway (Isle of Lewis), Fair Isle (between Orkney and Shetland) and Tain Range (Cromarty), and the temperature only reached 12.0C at Lerwick (Shetland). Highs in the low-20s were still noted in the south, though.

Mean maximum temperature during August ranged from fractionally below the 1981-2010 norm in western Scotland to 1.5 degC above in eastern England, while mean minimum temperature was 0.0-1.0 degC above in all regions. It was the warmest August averaged nationally since 2004, and just 13 Augusts in the last 100 years were warmer. Rainfall was rather above average in northern Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, but it was a dry month in all other regions, and over England and Wales the rainfall percentage was 87 making this the driest August since 2007. Sunshine percentages ranged from 77 in western Scotland to 120 in East Anglia, and the highest sunshine total was 306.8h at St Helier (Jersey).

Stations marked with an asterisk record sunshine electronically; comparisons
with earlier records are therefore somewhat speculative. Thorney Island's
sunshine figures are from a nearby site. Woodford's data are estimated.
  Averages are for 1981-2010.
