MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 694 For OCTOBER 2013
MOSTLY WARM AND WET, BUT A RATHER COLD WEEK FROM 9TH-16TH; NOTABLE GALE IN SOUTHERN ENGLAND EARLY ON THE 28TH
Text Box: During October the Icelandic Low was displaced southwards to 56N 29W at 999 mbar, and the mean flow over the British Isles was south-westerly. Mean pressure ranged from 6 mbar below normal in southwest Ireland to 1.5 mbar below in Shetland, and the anomalous flow over the country was south to south-easterly.

The month opened with a south-easterly airstream in charge thanks to a large anticyclone located over the southern Baltic but pressure over the UK was relatively low so the weather was unsettled; the flow veered south-westerly from the 5th and conditions became more settled over England, Wales, and eastern Scotland. The first eight days of October were consistently warm with an overnight low early on the 4th of 17.1C at Lee-on-Solent (Hants) and highs of 22.4C at Donna Nook (Lincs) on the 7th and 22.3C at Wainfleet (also Lincs) on the 8th. Heavy rain fell chiefly in western districts on the first four days of the month, and the 3rd was particularly wet with 60mm at Aberdaron (Caernarfon) and 58mm at Valley (Anglesey). Some rain did fall in eastern districts, but mostly in small amounts except in Kent and Essex. The sunniest day was the 6th, with 10.6h bright sunshine at Filton (near Bristol).

The 9th was dry and quite mild in southern districts too, but between the 8th and 9th the temperature dropped 10 degC at Aboyne and Dyce (both Aberdeenshire). There then followed about a week of rather cold weather between the 9th and 16th. An anticyclone developed to the west of Scotland and then moved slowly north, and a northerly type, quickly followed by a northeasterly, developed over the UK. A depression moved westward into south-east England on the 13th and 14th, before moving back north-eastward over subsequent days. At Loch Glascarnoch (Wester Ross) the temperature on the 9th climbed no higher than 6.4C, and on the 10th the maximum was just 6.7C at Braemar (Aberdeenshire). There was widespread frost in Scotland and northern England between the 10th and the 16th, and the lowest minimum during this period was minus 3.6C
Text Box: at Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire) on the 12th. There was widespread rain on the 11th and 12th over England and Wales, heaviest in the Southeast on the 12th when 62mm fell at Herstmonceux (East Sussex).

A very unsettled southwesterly regime returned on the 17th and lasted until the 28th, before veering westerly. There were heavy falls of rain almost daily during this period, with 50mm at Kirkwall (Orkney) on the 19th and 55mm at Tredegar (Monmouthshire) on the 21st, while thunder occurred widely on the 20th and 22nd. Afternoon highs were typically between 16 and 19C, though, with 19.6C logged at Gravesend/Broadness (Kent) on the 25th. The night of 21st/22nd was particularly warm with a minimum of 16.3C at St James's Park (London). Early on the 28th a depression deepened rapidly as it tracked from the Bristol Channel to The Wash; strongest winds were from Dorset to Suffolk and all points south, with 71kn at Langdon Bay (near Dover) and 91kn at Sandettie Light Vessel in the Dover Straits. The remainder of October continued changeable with temperatures closer to the seasonal average.

Mean maximum temperature ranged from 0.5 degC above average in Scotland to 1.5 degC above in Southwest England, south Wales and the Midlands. Mean minimum temperature ranged from 1.0 degC above in northern Scotland to 3.0 degC above in the English Midlands. October 2013 was equally as warm as October 2011, but in the last 100 years there have been only six warmer Octobers. Rainfall was above average in all regions except northern Scotland, and the England and Wales figure was 43 per cent above the 1981-2010 mean making this the wettest October since 2000. Sunshine percentages were 10 to 30 per cent below normal except in Northern Ireland, and this was the dullest October over England and Wales since 2005.

Stations marked with an asterisk record sunshine electronically; comparisons
with earlier records are therefore somewhat speculative. Thorney Island's
sunshine figures are made at a nearby site.
