MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 695 For NOVEMBER 2013
RATHER COLD, SUNNY, AND GENERALLY DRY
Text Box: The weather remained changeable until the 11th, but thereafter it was generally dry and rather cold with plentiful sunshine. Pressure was above normal in all parts of the British Isles except Shetland, with anomalies ranging from 0.0 mbar in Shetland to +8.0 mbar in southwest Ireland, and the anomalous flow was northerly over England and Wales, and north-westerly over Scotland and Northern Ireland.

November began with eleven days of very unsettled weather, notably on the 2nd when a deep depression tracked north-eastwards across the country bringing gusts to 77kn at Mumbles Head (Glamorgan) and to 70kn at Aberdaron (Caernarfon); there was a widespread frost across southern Scotland and northern England early on the 2nd, while the temperature reached 16.4C at Gravesend/Broadness (Kent) during the afternoon. Heavy rain affected northern Scotland on the same day, with 50mm at Kirkwall (Orkney) while rain affected southern districts on the 3rd with 43mm at Okehampton (Devon). There was a general frost over much of Scotland and Northern Ireland early on the 4th and 5th, and the 4th was particularly sunny across southern parts with 8.4h at Weymouth (Dorset). The 6th was a very mild day in southern England with 16.5C logged at Exeter (Devon), the highest temperature of the month, and the disturbed weather continued over the next few days, with 46mm of rain at Achnagart (Wester Ross) on the 7th and 8.4h bright sunshine at Wattisham (Suffolk) on the 10th. The 11th was also very mild with an early-morning low of 13.0C at St Mary's (Isles of Scilly) and an afternoon high of 16.0C, again at Exeter.

Pressure became high over southern districts from the 12th to the 17th, but changeable westerly winds continued in Scotland and Northern Ireland and 43mm of rain fell on the 13th at Cluanie Inn (Wester Ross), but over England and Wales the period 12th-16th was particularly sunny, and the temperature reached 15.0C at Fyvie (Aberdeenshire) on the
Text Box: 16th. The coldest episode during the month came between the 19th and 25th, and on the 19th the day's high at Carterhouse (Roxburghshire) was just 0.6C despite plentiful sunshine. On the 20th a deep depression tracked southwards off the east coast of Scotland and England, hail and thunder occurred in London, and snow fell as far south as the North Downs in Kent, while 55mm of rain fell at Chillingham Castle (Northumberland). The 22nd was a particularly cold though sunny day with an early-morning low of -7.7C at Tyndrum (Stirlingshire) and a high of 0.4C again at Carterhouse, with 7.9h bright sunshine at Camborne (Cornwall), as an anticyclone became established to the west of Scotland. The high then moved to Scotland itself on the 25th, and a minimum temperature of -8.1C was logged at Braemar (Aberdeenshire) during the early hours of that day.

The anticylone migrated to a position just southwest of Ireland early on the 27th where it remained for the rest of the month. Modest amounts of rain fell in northern and western Scotland, but the weather remained largely dry over England and Wales; 7.5h of sunshine was recorded on the 26th and 30th at Weymouth (Dorset). The temperature reached 13.2C at Kinlochewe (Wester Ross) on the 26th and 13.3C at Monkswood (Cambs) on the 27th.

Mean temperature was between 0.0 and 1.5 degC below the 1981-2010 average in all parts of the country, and in the last 100 years there have been 27 colder Novembers. Rainfall was above average only in northern Scotland; elsewhere it was below average and just 18mm of rain fell during the month at Auchterhouse (Angus). Sunshine percentages ranged between 112 in Wales and 192 in northeast England; the sun shone for a total of 115h at Leuchars (Fife), establishing a new record for the site (records began there in 1922).
