No. 697 For JANUARY 2014
RELENTLESSLY DISTURBED AND EXCEPTIONALLY WET. LOWEST MEAN PRESSURE IN 142 YEARS OF RECORDS
Text Box: This was the most cyclonic January in 142 years of records, and as a consequence it was exceptionally wet. Only the January of 1948 was wetter - marginally - over England and Wales in a record extending back to 1766. It was also very mild, while sunshine ranged from much below normal in western Scotland and northwest England to rather above in central and eastern England.

The first seven days of January continued the exceptionally disturbed character of late December. A deep depression crossed Ireland and Scotland on the 1st, and further deep depressions brushed past northwest Scotland on the 3rd and the 6th. High spring tides were an additional hazard during the first week of the month, alongside severe gales and heavy rain. Cornwall, south Devon and Dorset were badly affected, while Aberystwyth (Ceredigion) was badly hit with parts of the promenade severely damaged. Early on the 5th the temperature dropped to -6.6C at Altnaharra (Sutherland) under clear skies and light winds, but at the other end of the country the temperature climbed to 14.1C at Bude (Cornwall) later in the day. Overnight 5th/6th the temperature fell no lower than 10.7C at Guernsey airport (Channel Is). Heaviest falls of rain were 43mm at Tredegar (Monmouthshire) on the 1st, 63mm at Achnagart (Wester Ross) on the 2nd, and 69mm at Cluanie Inn (also Wester Ross) on the 6th, while strongest winds happened on the 3rd, 4th and 6th, with gusts to 77kn at Alderney (Channel Is) on the 3rd, 70kn at Lee-on-Solent (Hants) on the 4th, and 70kn again at Capel Curig (Gwynned) on the 6th.

The weather became rather less windy between the 8th and 23rd, though it still remained very unsettled. A depression crossed the country on the 9th, followed by a ridge of high pressure overnight 11th/12th, and another depression took up a position west of Ireland on the 14th, crossing Ireland late on the 16th. A further depression settled off northwest Ireland on the 21st and 22nd. The 11th was a sunny day with as
Text Box: much as 7.9h bright sunshine at Guernsey airport, and the following night was frosty with a minimum of -6.4C at Chesham (Bucks), otherwise it remained comparatively mild with a high of 12.5C at Chivenor (Devon) and Bude (Cornwall) on the 15th. Heavy rain resulted in renewed flooding in southeast England on the 16th with 48mm at Charlwood (Surrey) in 36h, and there was a further downpour in the Scottish Borders on the 21st with 41mm at Carter Bar (Roxburghshire).

A deep depression crossed Iceland on the 24th and a further vigorous low approached Scotland on the 27th before turning southwards and filling slowly. There was a solitary day of easterly winds on the 30th before another deep depression approached Ireland on the 31st. The 25th was a mild day with a high of 12.7C at Gravesend/ Broadness (Kent), but a marked squall-line crossed the country the same day with thunder, lightning, hail and powerful gusts of wind: at Lydd airport (Kent) gust speeds hit 65kn, but it was even wetter and windier the next day with a 24h rainfall of 56mm at Tyndrum (Stirlingshire) and gusts to 70kn at South Uist (Western Isles). It became markedly colder on the 29th with a high of 0.2C at Lake Vyrnwy (Gwynned) but further rain and strong winds spread from the west on the 31st.

Mean temperature was between 0.5 and 2.0 degC above the 1981-2010 average in most parts of the country (the exception was Northern Ireland), and in the last 100 years there have been 14 warmer Januarys. Rainfall was well above average in all regions apart from scattered locations in northern Scotland; the provisional England and Wales figure was 176mm, very close to January 1948's 177mm. Sunshine percentages ranged between 50 in western Scotland and 125 in East Anglia and the Midlands; aggregate sunshine hours varied between 11h at Eskdalemuir (Dumfriesshire) and 90h at Coleshill (West Midlands).
