MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 698 For FEBRUARY 2014
LOWEST MEAN SEA-LEVEL PRESSURE FOR ANY MONTH; EXCEPTIONALLY WET ESPECIALLY IN THE SOUTH
Text Box: Mean sea-level pressure over the British Isles 'block' - 50-60N, 00-10W - was the lowest, not just in February but in all months, in 142 years of records, and by some margin too. The average pressure for the block was 5.5mbar lower than the previous record which was in February 1990. Several Februarys were wetter than this one, including 1990, while it was also very mild, and sunshine ranged from well below normal in western Scotland and northwest England to well above normal in the Midlands and East Anglia.

The first 15 days of February continued the exceptionally disturbed weather of the second half of December and most of January, with very deep depressions brushing past or crossing the British Isles almost every other day. Those of the 1st, 3rd, 5th and 8th deepened to 940 mbar or just below. The first three days of the month were mainly dry and quite sunny away from western and northern districts. But the period 4th-8th was very wet with 45mm at Lake Vyrnwy (Gwynedd) on the 5th and 43mm at Libanus (Powys) on the 8th, while on the 6th 25mm was widely exceeded. It also became very windy at times, with strongest gusts of 80kn at St Mary's (Isles of Scilly) on the 4th. There was widespread frost in Scotland overnight 6th-7th and 10th-11th, while the maximum temperature on the 11th was 0.9C at Dalwhinnie (Inverness-shire) - the lowest of the entire month. Severe gales developed on the 12th in southwest England, Wales, and parts of northwest England; during the afternoon and evening mean wind speeds exceeded 50kn in those areas, with a peak gust of 94kn at Aberdaron (Gwynedd), and widespread gale damage ensued. A second gale followed two days later and winds were rather stronger on this occasion in southeast England and East Anglia though there was a maximum gust of 'only' 71kn at Portland (Dorset) during the early hours of the 15th. Highs of 12.6C were logged on the 14th at Exeter (Devon) and Bude (Cornwall) while 54mm of rain fell at Capel Curig (Gwynedd). During this extended spell snow only fell over high ground from mid-Wales and the north Midlands northwards.
Text Box: The weather became a little quieter - though still changeable - between the 16th and 24th and it became very mild, though there was one cold night, the 16th-17th, over northern Scotland when the temperature dipped to -7.7C at Altnaharra (Sutherland). There was 9.0h of bright sunshine at Manston (Kent) on the 16th, while maximum temperatures included 13.7C at Coningsby (Lincs) on the 20th and 14.9C at Kew Gardens, Heathrow and St James's Park (all Greater London) on the 24th. A rainfall total of 69mm was registered at Cluanie Inn (Wester Ross) on the 22nd.

Further deep depressions headed past northwest Scotland during the remainder of the month but a final depression headed across southern England as a filling feature on the 28th. Temperatures fell a few degrees during this final phase, but there was further heavy rain at times in western districts, notably 53mm at Achnagart (Wester Ross) on the 25th. The 28th was sunny over much of Scotland and northern England with as much as 9.1h of bright sunshine at Dyce (Aberdeenshire), but across south Wales, southern England, the south Midlands and East Anglia it rained for much of the day, and there was a little sleet or wet snow over high ground.

Mean temperature was between 0.5 and 2.5 degC above the 1981-2010 average in most parts of the country, and in the last 100 years there have been just nine warmer Februarys. Rainfall was well above average in all regions apart from a few locations in eastern Scotland and eastern England; the provisional England and Wales figure was 139mm and only five Februarys in the last 100 years have been wetter. Sunshine percentages ranged between 54 in western Scotland and 139 in East Anglia; aggregate sunshine hours varied between 16h at Eskdalemuir (Dumfriesshire) where it was the dullest February in over 100 years of records, and 127h at St Helier (Jersey).
