MONTHLY SUMMARY
No. 702 For JUNE 2014
MOSTLY RATHER WARM AND DRY WITH LONG SUNNY PERIODS, BUT RATHER CLOUDY OVER MOST OF SCOTLAND
Text Box: The monthly pressure chart showed a weak high pressure over north Wales at 1020 hPa, so the mean flow was sluggishly westerly over Scotland and weakly easterly in the English Channel. Pressure ranged from 1 hPa above normal in southwest England to 5.5 hPa above in Shetland, so the anomalous flow was east to north-easterly.

From the 1st to the 3rd June pressure was low to the northwest of the UK, then followed two days with lowest pressure over the UK, then from the 6th to the 10th low pressure was anchored to the southwest of the British Isles and until the 10th the weather was largely cloudy and showery with local thunder. The month began with rather warm weather but the 3rd and 4th were decidedly cool with a maximum reading of just 8.9C at Tredegar (Monmouthshire) on the 4th, and also on the 4th 36.7mm of rain fell at Berwick-upon-Tweed (Northumberland) in a thunderstorm. Early on the 6th Lake Bala (Gwynedd) recorded 1.0C, the lowest minimum of the month, but from that day onwards temperatures rose again with highs of 25.6C at St Helier (Jersey) on the 6th itself and 26.5C at Writtle (Essex) on the 9th. The minimum temperature overnight 9th/10th was 16.3C at Cromer (Norfolk) while the strongest winds of the month were recorded at Sule Skerry (off the northwestern tip of Scotland) with gusts to 46kn.

Pressure rose over the UK between the 11th and 13th, though a thundery trough became embedded in the circulation of the high overnight 13th/14th. The temperature climbed to 26.1C at St James's Park (London) on the 12th and to 26.2C at Heathrow 2 (London) on the 13th, but there was widespread thundery activity in the south Midlands and central southern England on the night of the 13th/14th with 38.2mm falling at Wokingham (Berks) in less than 5h.
Text Box: Pressure remained high just to the west of the British Isles until the 24th, though there was a rather cool spell between the 14th and 16th, but the weather became much warmer till the 24th. It was also dry in most regions with long sunny periods. Temperatures reached 22-26C quite widely between the 17th and 24th, with 15.7h bright sunshine at Thomastown (Fermanagh) on the 16th. The highest temperature during this spell was 26.5C at Strathallan (Perthshire) on the 18th, while the temperature did not fall below 16.1C at Morecambe (Lancs) overnight 17th/18th, or 16.2C at St Catherine's Point (I.o.Wight) overnight 23rd/24th. Meanwhile there were scattered thunderstorms in East Anglia in the late-afternoon/early-evening of the 23rd.

Conditions became rather cooler and more unsettled as the anticyclone moved to the north of Scotland and a shallow, thundery depression crossed Wales and the Midlands on the 27th and 28th. During the 26th 16.5h bright sunshine was logged at Stornoway (Isle of Lewis), while 56.8mm of rain fell in a heavy thunderstorm overnight 28th/29th at Boughton-under-Blean (Kent) - most of the rain falling in just 5h. Early on the 30th the temperature dropped to 2.0C at Capel Curig (Gwynedd).

Mean temperature was between 0.5 and 2.0 degC above the 1981-2010 average in all parts of the country, and in the last 100 years there have been 12 Junes which were warmer or as warm. Rainfall was below average in all regions apart from eastern Scotland where it was slightly above average; the provisional England and Wales figure was 50mm, some 75 per cent of the long-term average, and in the last 100 years 39 Junes were drier. Sunshine percentages ranged from 70-80 in northern and eastern Scotland to 130 in southwest England and south Wales and in the last 100 years 24 Junes were sunnier over England and Wales; aggregate sunshine hours showed a wide range from 68h at Lerwick (Shetland) to 323h at St Helier (Jersey).
